 Light therapy that works consistently Nov 18, 2007

I got a Happy Light about 6 weeks ago, and it has worked very well for me. I've made the mistake a few times of skipping my morning light session and I can always tell by evening - but the next day, after using the lamp, I'm back to normal. I've been dealing with SAD for years and put off buying a lamp, but they are worth every penny.
I noticed another reviewer was skeptical a short time after starting to use the HappyLight. FWIW, it can take a week or so for the light therapy to really take effect. Light therapy is also ineffective for 20% of SAD sufferers, so it may not be a problem with the lamp. But my advice is to give it time - if you're part of the 80% it helps, you'll get there with consistent use.

I ordered the HappyLite about 4 months before they even shipped the product, because it was the first reasonably priced (and sized) light to help treat SAD. Living in Minnesota, I tend to get depressed in February, so wanted to see if the light would help. Starting in Oct/Nov 2003, I began turning it on at desk height at my work for the suggested amount of time. I did not use it on weekends.
Anyway, I think that it helped me keep from sinking so low with the SAD blues in February, but it did not completely keep SAD away. I spent 4 days on the beach in Florida during the 3rd week of February, and that helped the most.
I will indeed use the light again this winter, because it helps--but does not eliminate--SAD for me.

I just got my happy light a couple days ago. I guess it is sorta a given (because the light bulbs are florescent), but I thought everyone should know that sitting in front of a happy light is nothing like real daylight. The experience is very artificial. I'm sitting in front of it now-it kinda feels like a trip to Kmart.
However, the light is also not as bright as I thought it would be. This could be a good thing because I can still sit at my desk and get work done while using the Happy Light. So far I would have to say that it is better than sitting at a desk with "regular" light. I do feel more awake. I'm going to keep an open mind and use the thing every day and then write back later. OOOO if you do decide to get one, check the verilux site first; they are having a special and it is cheaper than on amazon.

Around each November, I become a horrendous crab. It starts around daylight-savings time. It's as if a black curtain drops around me and I remain this way until the bright sun of April rolls around and I see longer days and warm winds. Last year I year I promised myself that I would drop the 200 bucks to get a SAD light. I forgot about it until my husband, who helpfully pointed out that I was in my usual Nov. crabmeister mode, reminded me about buying a light. ON THE FIRST DAY-I found myself not wanting to leave my desk, where I have placed my new best friend Mr. Verilux, and enjoying the work that was in front of me! I feel renewed and not terribly so crabby-it's working! I recommend this lamp to every one who finds themselves angry and hating Nov-Mar in every cold and lousy state they live in! Mine MN.

I have lived with severe depression since I have been 12 yrs. old. I am now 45. It gets worse in the winter, and I live in Wisconsin where 5 months out of the year are generally dark and cold. My husband bought me this light last year, and I didn't use it every day. This fall, I asked my psychiatrist exactly how to use it so I could give it a fair chance and really see if it makes a difference. He said start a month before you think you're really going to need the relief, use it minimally 1/2 hour every day, and keep the light 12-16 inches away from your eyes. He said if you're going to read or do something else, you must make eye contact with the light for one full second every thirty seconds. I started using it and decided to just prop it up on my bent knees as I sat up in bed against the headboard. I found it meditative, and I just relaxed my eyes, looked into the light box and thought about the beach. For the first time in my life that I can remember, when it's dark outside, it's light and sunny in my head. I don't feel like I live in a cave, I have energy and I laugh. IT WORKS. IT REALLY WORKS!!!!!
