Good machine w/ user UNfrindly software May 18, 2007
By D. Cheng XE-A505 is a good small business cash register support 99 departments and 9999 Price Look Up (PLU/UPC) code. That's if you want build it one item at time. Unfortunately the software provide by Sharp for build, update PLU/UPC code are very user unfrindly. You have to scan or key in the code on the register before it can be updated on your PC. Propitiatory database which has no import/export utility to interface PLU/UPC database with MS Excel or other popular spreedsheets therefore in practice for a small business like ours you can only maintain few hundred items. No easy way to make across board price changes other than time consumming item by item. If any one knows any 3rd party data exchange software can interface with XE-A505 SD saved programming data please let me know.
If I do this over again I will check out software capability (which is not very clear in manufacture's product description)before I buy.
If you don't need maintain high number of PLU/UPC this is a good machine otherwise check others out before you make your decisions.
As April, 2010 I dumped XE-A505 cash register. I now use Imonggo a web base cash register and it works great. Any Internet connection will do. (ADSL, Cable, WIFI or a smartphone with 3G data plan). I use my laptop with Vorizon EVDO data connecting and a USB thermal receipt printer linked to a cash drawer. As this month (July 2010) I also singed up their integrated credit card service and canceling my existing mobile credit card processing service. I recommend try Imonggo free version and see for your self. Free version URL: [...]

Sharp cash register with scanner Jul 09, 2007
By D. Clemons Cash register works ok. Bar scanner does not work at all in the sunlight! We bought it to use in a fireworks tent, and had to create dark shade to get it to work during the day. The logo feature is not very good for the register receipt. It never comes out like you want it, and it is VERY limited as to what you can do.

excellant cash register May 13, 2007
By R. Ricketts MY old cash register went out. I bought a Royal and was not happy. I purchased the Sharp XE-A505 and programmed it and returned the Royal. The software is better, the programming easier, and having the journal tape made this machine a good choice. This register is a great value and just satisfies my need so well. I like it.

"broken"
I first ordered this product back in january, but had to send it back because the original register didn't work properly. The register we have now works fine, but it is taking me a while to learn how to use.

Sharp XE-A505 Cash Register Jan 14, 2010

"Store Keeper"
This is NOT a cash register for scanning. Yet it is too expensive for use as a simple cash register with four tax codes. I did use it for scanning but you CAN NOT PROGRAM it from your PC ! Everything is item by item at the register. But I am hard-headed. I did enter over 1000 UPC codes in the register manually. Then the register froze (I've had it about 10 months) I was devastated, I use a good power conditioner and the wiring and plug were not disturbed. I had stopped pricing items in my store. But I was able to restore the programming. I was elated ! I had been backing up the FULL programming every week and saving it to the SD card (it will Not take a card bigger than 512 MB though). I still had to do some reprogramming besides the RESTORE procedure. Now about 6 weeks after that, and doing full backups every night, AGAIN the register lost its memory during normal use. I had to again CLOSE THE STORE and went through the restore sequence. I am going to HAVE TO find a new register. It is great that I can restore and get it up and running again, BUT NO BUSINESS CAN RUN WITH AN UNRELIABLE SYSTEM. The proported link to Quckbooks is fraudulent. You can NOT do anything in QB that can be exported to the register. Support for the register from the factory is non-existant.
