The register is great but the SD card feature is pitiful Apr 07, 2007
By Valerie J. Kramer The Sharp XE-A404 cash register is basically a very good machine. It has way more features than I'll ever need or want and can handle a much more complex store than our little mom & pop store. Some of the features that attracted me to this specific model were the full size cash drawer, the keyboard which has real keys instead of some kind of rubber touchpad, the ability to issue receipts and the number of department keys. It works very much like most other registers we've owned and the instruction book was clear and easy to follow - though perhaps my prior experience with other machines may have helped me a bit there! My only disappointment with this machine has been with the software for reporting data stored on the SD card. I expected I'd be able to view the equivalent of the machine's paper tape on my PC. No way! You can see (and print) totals by hour, by clerk, by department, by PLU/UPC, or by transaction type. You can see/print totals for a given date or for a date range but that's about ALL you can do. You cannot look up what happened at a specific time or what transaction followed some other one or any of the other questions that may be answered from the paper tape. It seems like a silly oversight that would have been so easy to include. The data stored on the tape appears to be in some insane format with a multitude of files for each date. If anyone figures out how to write programs to access the raw data, I hope you'll post it on the net. Still, you don't really NEED to use the SD card and given the lack of usefulness, you may well decide not to bother. The rest of the register should make you very happy.

sort of FALSE Advertising Aug 09, 2008

"Silence Dogood"
Just purchased the Sharp XE A404. The promos and even a pre-purchase call to Sharp Customer Service all misled me to believe that it could be used with our Quickbooks. We have QuickBooks Pro 2008 and the cash register cannot communicate with our computer. It only works with QB 2006 and OLDER. Also, new larger storage SD cards will not work as they don't have SMALL enough memory. It only works with a 128Mb or 512MB. The sole reason we wanted this machine was its supposed compatibility with QuickBooks. The customer service person was either mis-informed or lying. It looks nice and is quiet. The manual is poorly organized and does not detail enough information. The software for the computer interface is merely an infantile spread sheet. Forget about customized "Logo" interfacing/creating from your computer to the cash register. This is a stand alone unit...and not that great. Oh..I've been in retail for 30 years.
Superb in every way Sep 09, 2010
By Lts We had purchased this same machine a couple years ago and really liked all the features. When the time came for our retail operation to add another cashier station, I was elated to find the exact machine was still available for purchase. Makes it easier for the cashier staff with both machines being identical and programmed the same in every way.
Product arrived in record time and you have another very happy customer.
