5man learns to write  Apr 07, 2007 By David A. Baer
My work demands a lot of interpersonal contact, face-to-face, over-the-phone, and written. Recently I have moved the more intimate of these communications off the electronic impersonality of email and onto quality stationery. At the same time, I've bought two fountain pens, my first ever, combining this black Cross Century II with its silver-and-gold twin. One stays at the office and one by my writing desk here at home.

In the mix, I find that I'm discovering a new art form and means of personal expression. Always an illegible writer, the stationery and the fine pen slow me down just enough to realize that I actually *can* write.

It is difficult to overestimate the potency of a hand-written note in the Age of Email. It is a bit of chosen retro-referencing upon which the recipients of my letters comment with appreciation. And it doesn't take *that* much time.

The Cross Century II can be considered near the top of the entry-level pens. I chose them because of good experience with Cross ballpoints, not wanting to spend too much until I figured out whether this was going to work, and my routinely bad experience with base-entry-level products.

I believe this pen is likely to serve me for years to come. As I learn the beauty of a fine or solid stroke, however, I also widen my peripheral vision and discover there's a high-end pen store at my local shopping center.

Uh-oh.

5Very nice pen  Mar 23, 2007 By John H. Burnette
I loved the pen with but two reservations.

(1) I wish it also came in a FINE nib, the medium ink flows like silk, but it's a bit thicker than I prefer.

(2) Foolishly I leaned over the side of a boat with the pen.... bloooop.... This pen doesn't float very well. Unfortunately it's hard to list that as a defect worthy of replacement by cross.

This pen is worth WAY more than it's listed for

5This is the best pen I've ever had  Jan 01, 2007
This is a X'mas present from my father. I love it! The writings are very smooth and the ink is very dark. The pen itself is made of very high quality material and feels very smooth. The ink cartridges are easy to put in. Do not put in a second cartridge (like what the cartridge box would suggest you to do) as it will get stuck. My father had to use a plier to remove it.

3Good for moderate priced fountain pen  Dec 28, 2007 By JAL3
This pen writes well for a moderate priced pen. The pen is stylish compared to other brands at this price point. The gold plated accents dress up the pen compared to pens with steel nibs and clips. The Cross cap style, which offsets the clip well below the top of the cap, "protrudes" above a shirt pocket more than I prefer. Also, the pen does not have the comfortable "heft" or "balance" in my hand that I appreciate on more expensive pens. But overall, for a low cost fountain pen for daily use, the pen is good. If you lose or damage this pen through daily wear and tear, you will not lose lots of $$$

5Still writing after all these years!  Jan 01, 2008 By Peloni
In 1991 my husband received this pen as part of a set. Since he's not much for pens, and I am (I was a student at the time and am now an English teacher), I quickly snapped it away from him. It remains one of my very favorite writing instruments and continues to amaze and impress my high school students.

What I like best about it is the solid, smooth feel in my hand and the beautiful line of ink it lays on the paper. I've adored fountain pens since I was in junior high many years ago, and have a collection of dipping pens with wooden bodies and steel nibs that I used in art classes for calligraphy. This pen serves my adult writing obsession very well - even after almost 17 years of use. I can't promise that it will last that long for everyone, but it well designed and constructed.

I jazz up my writing by using sea green, purple, or copper colored ink; it's simple to switch colors by refilling the converter. If you're in the market for a durable, beautiful writing instrument, I heartily recommend this pen.
